The National Enterprise Network Annual Conference 2026 brought together leaders from across the enterprise support ecosystem to explore how the UK can strengthen its support for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
Hosted at Barclays’ Canary Wharf headquarters, this year’s conference—under the theme Ignite Enterprise, Inspire Change—created a platform for open, honest and forward-thinking discussion. Delegates included representatives from enterprise agencies, local authorities, universities, funders, banks, policymakers and businesses, reflecting the breadth and diversity of the sector.
The day opened with keynote insights into the current SME landscape, reinforcing the critical role that micro and small businesses play in the UK economy. Discussions highlighted the need to better support businesses to scale, recognise the potential of micro-enterprises, and ensure greater stability within the business support system.
Throughout the conference, a consistent message emerged: the importance of a more coordinated, consistent and evidence-led approach to enterprise support. Delegates discussed the challenges of fragmentation, duplication and regional disparities, often referred to as ‘postcode lotteries’, and explored the potential for a more aligned national framework that builds on what already works.
There was a strong emphasis on moving beyond process-driven delivery towards a focus on outcomes and impact. Contributors highlighted the need for government and stakeholders to invest in proven models of support, allowing them to evolve rather than continually introducing new initiatives without long-term evaluation.
Importantly, the conference also created space for honest reflection on the pressures facing the sector, including funding constraints and increasing demand. Panel discussions explored the realities on the ground, with contributors highlighting the importance of partnership working and local leadership in maintaining quality and trust.
One of the standout elements of the day was hearing directly from entrepreneurs. Four founders shared their personal journeys, offering powerful insights into the realities of starting and growing a business. Their stories reinforced a key message: there is no instruction manual for entrepreneurship. Instead, success is often built on resilience, access to trusted networks, and the availability of timely, relevant support.
Across keynote sessions, panel discussions and breakout conversations, the energy in the room was proactive, passionate and solutions-focused. The conference not only highlighted the challenges facing the enterprise support landscape, but also demonstrated a collective commitment to improving how the system works for businesses.
